Description

Please join SAPIS Counselor Pallavi Shastri and her extremely enthusiastic and articulate student Green Team members at NYC Eco-School PS 69Q (77-02 37th Avenue, Jackson Heights (Queens)) on Wednesday, February 24th from 4pm to 6pm for the National Wildlife Federation's first borough-wide SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR GATHERING of the 2016 school year! Queens is our featured borough in February and the Gathering is open to educators from across NYC.

Come and be inspired by the many incredible sustainability initiatives that Pallavi and her students are undertaking throughout the school and community:

  • Raising over $800 from the E-cycling of small electronics;

  • Creating and expanding an organic vegetable and herb garden;

  • Vermicomposting;

  • Picking up litter twice a week from the school yard and planting over 500 daffodils;

  • Recycling dried markers, pens, glue sticks and binders through Crayola and old crayons through the Crayon Initiative;

  • Collecting bottle caps, cardboard rolls, plastic packaging, walnut shells, shoe boxes, yogurt containers to create art, leading to the creation of over 900 recycled art projects for Earth Day alone;

  • Collecting over 3,000 pencils from the floor over 3 years and re-distributing them to families. In 2012-13, Pallavi and her students donated reclaimed pencils, along with unused school supplies, to schools that were affected by Sandy as well as other needy schools and homeless shelters.

This year, Pallavi and her students will also be launching NWF's schoolwide energy challenge - The Cool School Challenge (www.coolschoolchallenge.com). In addition, as part of NYC Eco-Schools' "Litter Less" waste reduction and recycling campaign, Pallavi and her team plan to expand an outdoor composting program as well as "create an atmosphere in the school where everyone is in the mindset of wasting less, refusing plastic, repurposing, reusing, [and] recycling supplies."

How do they do it all? Come and find out!
